Bombastic energy? Where?
Episode one was fine, but then after that it was slower than a rheumatic turtle, and about as exciting to watch. Terrible pacing, uninspired direction and voice acting, etc... Never mind the animation, the whole thing was terribly, mind-boggingly boring. I thought the premise was lots of fun, and I do expect the source material being more high energy/crazy, but as for the anime, I gave up after five episodes. |

A fair review all things considered. Certainly much more positive than I was expecting. Regarding the fights I'm not sure what it was but something about Adam vs Zeus won me over. Maybe it was the fact that I was watching the near naked first man in a fist fight with a greek god and thought it was hilarious, or perhaps it was the absurd commentary, maybe I simply resonated with the ethos of the moment when all of humanity stood together to support adam. Whatever it was saved the series for me, which means I didn't drop it, despite the animation as a whole being subpar and the fact that I couldn't connect with either Thor or Lu Bu, which means Round 1 was my least favorite fight. I also didn't like the flashback execution, which really killed the momentum in many places, however it did become more tolerable later.
Thankfully, I also enjoyed Kojiro vs Poseidon and while the animation and pacing could have been better I thought the theme was very engaging despite being predictable. I think I'll check out the manga because the combatants are just interesting enough to hopefully hold my attention for the duration of a battle and Brunhilde is just unhinged enough for me to care about what she's doing and the direction of the narrative. I was introduced to the manga a while back as "Shuumatsu no Valkyrie" so I didn't immediately recognize the anime when it was called "Record of Ragnarok" but I was pleasantly surprised to learn an anime was going to exist.
After having watched it all I can say while it's not a mind-blowing adaptation, I still enjoyed it. I actually preferred the English dub over the Japanese one. Brunhilde was more "colorful" and Adam's voice was simply perfection. |

Being someone whose only watched it and not read the source i've found it decidingly mediocre. I'm not sure why this tournament show does more talking and lying to its audience but i feel like that's a symptom of just poorly adapting the manga's twist that can be done with it's serialized nature. Had this show been executed akin to Yu Yu Hakusho's dark tournament arc it probably would have been better off. Instead though we get 2-3 minutes of fighting and ~20 minutes of exposition each episode. That kinda pace is just unsustainable.

Personally, I found even the original manga to be deeply meh. It feels like it's riding on the coattails of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure who's high octave energy and absurdity it tires to copy and the Fate franchise, specifically Fate/Grand Order with it's use of legendary and historical figures. Coincidence that it came out in Japan as both were enjoying all-time highs in popularity? I think not.

Granted it does fill a niche that Fate no longer does as it’s become more about fanservice and these high-concept romps than about brutal slug-fests between legendary figures. It’s rather refreshing in a sense especially without the unwieldy complexity that surrounds Fate’s power system. |

I enjoyed the show for what it was the animation was far to limited in vastly important story moments Mappa or Bones would of brought a real fluid visual presence to the show's animation but such is life. The dub was average at the end of the day but it was a fairly decent effort James Mathis III as the narrator was a highlight of the dub production. I do wish the manga would be released here in the states in a physical format so I could start to collect it the anime certainly made me want to check the manga out but all we get is a bare bones digital release at the end of the day. If a season two comes out I'll check it out as well.

Bones maybe, but MAPPA? With their production schedule? Jujutsu Kaisen felt like a fluke imo. What is clear is that Graphinica really shouldn't be doing full 2D productions if this is their best foot forward (then again, Expelled from Paradise wasn't a good first impression from a studio who primarily did subcontract CG and composite work anyway, so maybe they should just stick to that). The dub definitely surprised me with some of its casting choices, particularly with casting recognizable union talent like Mathias III or Keone Young, I'm not sure why it wasn't brought up in the review. |

Exactly. And that is why I actually and wholeheartedly enjoyed it. It had an incredible cast having the time of their lives (especially Miyukichi in Misato mode and Vocal Frymaster Kobayashi Yuu literally playing to her polarities), surprising moments of fluidity and plenty of GAR energy. It also had some genuinely original takes on history's biggest losers summoned as Humanity's heroes. And other than one overplayed moment with Suwabe Air time, it didn't have any uncanny CG. No overcooked plotting. No bewildering out of character behaviour. This show had a dunning kruger level of confidence and I loved it for it. I will take another season of this messy AF brawl over the human fell flat "epic" of Kumodesuga anyday. I can get my Aoi Yuki fix pretty much anywhere, but an ensemble cast thrown into a Fate-esque arena and told to go wild? Bring it on. |

This is exactly how I felt. Even ignoring what was clearly a lackluster adaptation by all accounts, for what's essentially just a giant tournament (usually a highlight for any big popular battle show), I was just really... bored the entire time. Neat premise though, and makes me want to check out the source material, so I guess that's one upside? Also, I was not super impressed with the dub here, with a few exceptions performance-wise. SDI Media's output has always been fairly inconsistent, and this felt like a phoned-in adaptation in many ways. Some of the casting felt out of place (love Jonah Scott, he's put out some of my favorite performances of the past year, but the dissonance between Adam's design and his super deep voice just made me chuckle every time he spoke), a few actors (most notably Ares 90% of the time) were not directed to match the energy/tone of the show's animation/facial expressions, and it felt like the script wasn't ever sure just how serious or silly it wanted to be. Maybe its partially the fault of the work itself, but to me, they tried to tackle both but it never really gelled. That being said, its still perfectly serviceable and there were thankfully still some solid performances (the narrator, Zeus, Brunhilde, and Loki's actors all knew how to tow the line between giving the moment its due and hamming it up) and Kellen Goff as Heimdall the hype man basically carried the dub for me. Between this, Akudama Drive, and Night is Short he's been killing it with more comedic roles. |

As cool as some fights are, we only got 3 fights out of 12 in a single season. What the heck happened? At least we had important info about the fighters. The manga is still ongoing in Japan so I wonder if the staff already caught up with the manga so they used some padding.
