Nintendo Sales Down 8% in 2nd Quarter Despite Mario Kart 8
posted on by Rachel Mahoney
The release of Mario Kart 8 in May has failed to boost Nintendo out of a second-quarter slump, with total sales dropping eight percent to 74.7 billion yen (US$72.7 million) since last quarter.
Nintendo suffered a 17.2 billion yen (US$174.9 million) loss in profits from 2012 to 2013.
The Wii U has only sold around 6.6 million units since its November 2012 release, while Sony's PlayStation 4 has sold 8.7 million units since its release one year later.
Nintendo still projects profits around 40 billion yen (US$39.2 million) by the end of 2014. Super Smash Brothers for Wii U is expected to bolster profits when it ships on September 13 in Japan and October 3 in North America and Europe. In addition, the Amiibo system will debut later this year.
