Satoshi Kon severely dislikes the American-drawn poster used by Dreamworks Pictures for the US-release DVD cover. Declaring "that isn't Chiyoko!" he refused to autograph promotional postcards for the film bearing this artwork at the 2003 Big Apple Anime Fest.

One of the characters in Chiyoko's films resembles Sanjuro Kuwabatake from Yojimbo.
The moon base design in Chiyoko's final film resembles the moon base of "2001: A Space Odyssey".
The film's plot is similar to the 1963 film "8½" which is about a filmmaker who recounts his life through his memoirs and movies.
When Genya speaks to his cameraman, he mentions that the documentary that they're going to make will be called "The Seven Ghosts" which is a reference to "The Seven Samurai". In the background there's a poster similar to the film's poster. While Genya makes a funny imitation of Kambei Shimada.
One of Chiyoko's films is a spoof of the original Godzilla, except the monster is a giant robotic lizard.
