Galaxy Express 999's Maetel Models for Hair Product Line

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

From Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Yugi Mutou to Bleach's Kenpachi Zaraki, anime characters are known for their wild and colorful hairstyles. Many are well-endowed in the hair department, but few moreso than Galaxy Express 999's Maetel. The golden-haired character became the model for Socialtech's Chap Up line of hair products on December 1.

Galaxy Express 999 manga creator Leiji Matsumoto drew a special illustration for the collaboration to showcase Maetel's unbelievably long and luscious locks. Maetel casts off her trademark fur hat to accentuate the beauty and strength of her hair in the image. She is the perfect model for a haircare line, and few well-known anime characters have hair more worthy of selling high-end products. Men even ranked Maetel #2 in the MyNavi Woman website's 2015 poll of "anime character hairstyles men want women to have."

Maetel will serve as the covergirl for the hair product line for one year. Tokyo's Omotesandō Station, which stands in a high-end shopping district, will display advertising for the campaign until December 31. An ad truck with promotional images will also operate in the area. The large gold text in the image reads, "Maetel, Hair, Shining" and has a play on words with the character's name.

A team of hair stylists and diagnosticians developed the line of organic, silicone-free shampoos and conditioning treatments. The products promise to be gentle on women's scalps while treating the source of hair problems and keeping their tresses beautiful. Products in the line range from 3,280 yen (about US$28) to 6,990 yen (US$59) each.

Hatsune Miku, virtual idol with glamorous pigtails, became spokesmodel for Lux shampoo and conditioner earlier this year. For a personalized experience, otaku can get a haircut especially for anime fans at the salon OFF-KAi!!, which just opened in October.

Thanks to Gwyn Campbell for the tip.
