Gley Lancer Scrolling Shooter Game Gets Reprint for Sega Mega Drive Console After 27 Years

posted on by Kim Morrissy
Reprint scheduled for June 6 release in Japan.

Retro game console and novelty goods seller Colombus Circle announced on April 10 that the 1992 scrolling shooter game Gley Lancer (also known as Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer, will get a reprint for the Sega Mega Drive on June 6, 2019. It has been 27 years since the game was first released in Japan. Colombus Circle posted a trailer for the re-release on its YouTube channel.

The game will be printed on Mega Drive cartridges and will be playable on the Mega Drive and other consoles that can play Mega Drive games, including the Mega Drive Mini (known as the "Sega Genesis Mini" in the United States) console that will be released globally on September 2019. However, it is not guaranteed to work on third-party units.

The game's story follows Lucia, a 16-year-old pilot in the Earth Federation who hijacks the "Gley Lancer" fighter plane in order to pursue her father after he is captured by an alien race. Although the original game never had an English release, it was released internationally on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008.

The Mega Drive was Sega's third console, and Sega released the console in Japan in 1989. Sega released the console in the same year in North America under the name Sega Genesis. Sega withdrew from the games console market in 2001.
