Pokemon's 25th Anniversary Celebrated on BBC's Newsjack

Sketch show imagines Ash and Pikachu's relationship problems after so long

The twenty-fifth anniversary of the birth of the Pokémon franchise - that is, 25 years since the release of the original Pocket Monsters Red and Green game on the Gameboy in 1996 - has been noted in the British media. For example, the Guardian newspaper has just run a story with the gloomy headline, "Pokémon was a key part of my childhood. Now it's 25, I feel old."

But for anyone looking for a lighter take on the subject, the BBC Radio 4 Extra sketch show Newsjack imagined how Ash and Pikachu's relationship has fared after so long - not so well, it turns out. The two-minute sketch has been made available on Newsjack's Twitter feed, with Ash and Pikachu voiced by comedians Luke Kempner and Nimisha Odedra.

Newsjack is unusual in that it allows unsolicited writers to submit comedy material. So if you've come up with a brilliant idea for a sketch involving, say, a well-known British politician being given a Death Note, you know where to send it.

Grateful thanks to Ian Wolf for the heads-up.
