Free Online Talk on Mecha Anime on November 10

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Zoom talk will be given by anime critic Ryota Fujitsu, as part of the Kotatsu anime festival

The Japan Foundation and the Kotatsu anime festival are hosting a free online Zoom talk on mecha anime on Friday November 10 from 6.30 p.m. It requires registration at the above link. The speaker will be Ryota Fujitsu, a freelance writer focusing on anime in books, magazines and other media. He is also an adjunct lecturer at Tokyo Polytechnic University and is the programming advisor for the anime section of the Tokyo International Film Festival.

The talk description says that parental description is required for under-13s. The talk is described as follows:

"Evangelion may be the first work evoked as mecha-anime, but the history goes back to the 1970s, and since then, Japanese have grown up with memories of machines as compelling characters. As part of the Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival 2023, with which The Japan Foundation joins as a partner, Ryota Fujitsu, Japan's leading animation critic, will unveil mecha-anime from Japan, overviewing its characteristics."

The Kotatsu anime festival is running in Wales; the programme at Cardiff is completed, and will be followed by a programme at Aberystwyth from October 20, and a programme at Bangor from November 11.
