NES Classic Edition Gets Re-Release on June 29

NES, SNES Classic Edition both expected to be available until end of year

Nintendo of America announced on Sunday that it will re-release the NES Classic Edition system on June 29, with both it and the SNES Classic Edition system "expected to be available through the end of the year." Nintendo also announced that it will re-release the Nintendo Classic Mini Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan on June 28.

Nintendo released the Classic Edition for its Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in the West and an equivalent Famicom in Japan in November 2016. Nintendo had shipped over 1.5 million units of the console worldwide as of the end of January 2017, and the high demand for the product created shortages. Nintendo of America ended shipments for the console in April 2017 and apologized for the lack of availability, noting that it added extra shipments but the Classic Edition was not intended to be an "ongoing, long-term product." Shipments of the Famicom Classic also ended in Japan last April, although Nintendo noted at the time the halt was temporary.

The NES Classic Edition system includes 30 classic games, some of which differ from the Japanese Famicom Classic.

Nintendo will offer a new "Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer Shūkan Shōnen Jump Zōkan 50-shūnen Kinen Version" (Family Computer Weekly Shonen Jump 50th Anniversary Edition) in Japan on July 7. The system will contain 20 games based on Weekly Shonen Jump properties.

Nintendo released the SNES Classic Edition in the West last September, and the equivalent Classic Mini Super Famicom in Japan debuted last October. The console has sold 5.28 million units worldwide as of March 31.
