Gegege no Kitarō Gets Tower Defense Smartphone Game

iOS/Android game launches in November

Toei Animation opened preregistration for a smartphone app game based on Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitarō manga on Tuesday. The game, titled Yuru~i GeGeGe no Kitarō: Yōkai Dotabata Daisensō (Lax GeGeGe no Kitarō: Yōkai Slapstick Big Battle), is slated to launch this November for iOS and Android devices.

PONOS and DeNA are jointly developing the tower defense-style game using the same system as PONOS' The Battle Cats game. Players can summon characters and attack enemy bases with teams of 10, but a "Hyakki Yagyō" (Parade of Yōkai) mode will allow players to call a large number of yōkai at once. The characters can evolve to change their appearance and level up.

The game will be free to play with in-app purchases.

Shigeru Mizuki's supernatural manga Kitaro (GeGeGe no Kitarō) began in 1959 under the name Hakaba Kitarō. The stories center on an inhuman boy who straddles the line between the human and supernatural worlds.

The manga has spawned several television series (including one Hakaba Kitarō anime), animated movies, and two live-action films.

The latest anime adaptation premiered on April 1 will run for 50+ episodes. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs.
