Starwing Paradox Game's Tournaments Canceled After Death Threats
posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
The official website for Square Enix's Starwing Paradox arcade game announced on Thursday that the staff has canceled the game's tournament events that were scheduled for later this month, due to the staff receiving numerous death threats.
The announcement noted that the game's management team had been receiving death threats since last week until this past Wednesday. After filing a police report, the team consulted with both police and the staff for each venue for the event and decided to prioritize the safety of attendees and cancel the events.
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Evangelion, Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water, Summer Wars), the character designer for the game, recently drew criticism for his comments last week in which he called Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung's Statue of Peace sculpture depicting World War II-era "comfort women" "dirty" and "vulgar." The game staff's announcement of the tournaments' cancellation did not mention Sadamoto or his comments.
The tournament events were slated for Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, and Fukuoka on Saturday, August 17, as well as Saturday, August 24.
The game launched in Japanese arcades last November. The game has a smartphone companion app for iOS and Android devices.
Sunrise handled the animation in the game.
